On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous lulled me in with the language. I'm fascinated by his mother and grandmother. His writing shined there. The sex stuff spooked me. Too graphic. The book felt overwrought at times. Reading it was like dragging your way through a bog in a thunderstorm.

This was my introduction to Ocean Vuong in 2019: https://lithub.com/ocean-vuong-the-10-books-i-needed-to-write-my-novel/

I quickly made a mental note to seek out his book. (I haven't got it yet though)

The lucidity and the poetic cohesion with which he talked about his writing process turned me into a fan instantly. If I were still a tweeting man at that time, I would have run to share this "discovery" with anyone who cared to listen. I can't wait to read the book.

"Afrobeats" makes me cringe! It doesn't matter if it's said by the DJs at BBC 1Xtra or by our own radio "personalities". Nothing we can do about it now since "afrobeats" is now global.
